Nature Conservation Consulting, Cambridgeshire, UK (January 2021-present)
Freelance nature conservation consultant and proprietor of Nature Conservation Consulting. Specialising in UK and EU nature conservation policy analysis, development and evaluation; including in relation to nature legislation, biodiversity strategies, land-use policies, funding, protected areas, biodiversity net gain / no-net loss, ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions, climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Institute for European Environmental Policy, London (February 2008 – December 2020)
An independent, not for profit institute dedicated to advancing an environmentally sustainable Europe through policy analysis development and dissemination.
Senior Fellow and Head of Biodiversity Programme, responsible for the strategic development and management of IEEP’s work on biodiversity, including the integration of biodiversity considerations into other aspects of environmental policy. Also a member of the IEEP Executive Management Group. Led 15, and substantially contributed to another 30, projects on environmental policies (e.g. biodiversity legislation and strategies, agriculture, bioenergy and climate change) for the European Commission, European Parliament, national governments and agencies, nature conservation NGOs and others.
Ecological Solutions, Cambridgeshire, UK (September 2002 – February 2008, part-time until April 2008)
Freelance ecological consultant and proprietor of Ecological Solutions.
Provided advice on biodiversity conservation and monitoring in the UK and Europe, such as on the implementation of the Habitats Directive in Romania and Croatia for the state nature conservation authorities, oversight of LIFE projects in the UK and Ireland for the European Commission, and initial drafting of an Action Plan and MoU for migratory Africa-Eurasian raptors for the Convention on Migratory Species.
Ecoscope Applied Ecologists, Cambridge, UK (November 1995 – September 2002)
Technical Director of the ecological consultancy, responsible for overall management of Cambridge Office (Head Office from September 2001), technical development and promotion of the practice, and the management of projects relating to biodiversity monitoring and conservation, habitat management and restoration, species action planning, management planning, environmental impact assessment and biodiversity offsets.
BirdLife International Secretariat, Cambridge, UK (September 1990 – November 1995)
Senior Officer, responsible for the development of a European habitat conservation strategy. This involved an assessment of the European conservation status of all bird species, the results of which were published in Birds in Europe: their conservation status (Tucker and Heath, 1994). Also the development of a series of Habitat Conservation Strategies, published by BirdLife as Habitats for birds in Europe: a strategy for their conservation in the wider environment (Tucker and Evans, 1997).
British Trust for Ornithology, Tring/ Thetford, UK (March – August 1990)
Used European ringing recovery data to assess the effects of hunting on European populations of migratory birds, as part of an EC-funded collaborative project with the International Council for Bird Preservation.
